Testosterone Propionate History and Overview
Testosterone Propionate was the earliest testosterone esters to be produced and available for medical use way back in the 1930s.
It retained medical popularity until the 1950s when longer lasting esters like testosterone enanthate and testosterone cypionate took over as the preferred option for treating low testosterone.
Testosterone Propionate is now rarely used for medical purposes because of its very short duration which requires patients to have several injections each week.
This ester is still used by some bodybuilders who prefer a faster acting form of testosterone despite these frequent (and famously painful) injections.
Many different pharmaceutical brand names have been used, and continue to be used for this steroid. Some of these include Testoviron, Andronate and Perandren. You will also find generic versions, but among all these counterfeits can certainly be a problem.
Testosterone Propionate is treated like all anabolic steroids by being banned in worldwide sporting competitions, and listed as a controlled substance in the United States.
Chemical Characteristics and Properties
Testosterone Propionate is the same testosterone hormone as we get with all other forms of testosterone steroids, with the only difference being the attached ester.
The purpose of the ester is to provide a controlled release of the hormone, so its effects last longer than unesterified testosterone which would pass through the body very quickly.
In this case it is the Propionate ester that controls when and how long testosterone is released after your injection.
A chemical bond exists between this ester and the testosterone hormone, and its the bond breaking enzymes that control how long it takes for the hormone to release and for you to start noticing its effects.
Testosterone Propionate is considered to be a fast release ester with a half life of about two days. This is of course slower than free testosterone, but much quicker than other popular testosterone steroids like Testosterone Enanthate.
Whether you see this as an advantage or a disadvantage will very much be a personal preference.
As is the case with all standard testosterone steroids, Testosterone Propionate comes with an anabolic and androgenic rating of 100 and 100.

Effects of Testosterone Propionate (Testosterone Propionate Benefits)
If you’ve ever used any form of testosterone steroid in the past, you will have a very good idea of what Testosterone Propionate will do. The only difference will be in the timing and the duration of the effects.
Because Testosterone Propionate is a very fast acting, but short duration steroid your effects start becoming noticeable very early on in the cycle.
If we compare this to the very popular Testosterone Enanthate which can take up to two weeks before you start noticing any effects, there’s going to be a noticeable difference in the progress you can start making in those early weeks of the cycle.
In this case there is less need to add a kickstarting steroid to the cycle, as we often do with something like Dianabol to get things moving quickly; unless of course you desire those extra powerful anabolic benefits on top of testosterone.
So what are the most important effects of Testosterone Propionate that make this steroid worth using?
In effect you are getting everything that testosterone naturally does in the body, but at a much more multiplied level according to what your dosage will be. At its core, as it relates to the interests of bodybuilders like us, Testosterone Propionate will be responsible for:
- Increasing protein synthesis and nitrogen retention
- Boosting the count of red blood cells in circulation
- Higher output of IGF-1 (Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1)
- Reduction of stress hormones like cortisol
Here’s what you can look forward to on a practical level:
- Gaining muscle: Testosterone plays a major role in the growth of muscle in males, so when you take higher amounts of this anabolic hormone with Testosterone Propionate injections in combination with the right amount and type of food and training, muscle growth will be substantial. If this is your first or second cycle then gains can be significant in those early stages.
- Working out harder and longer: Testosterone Propionate will boost endurance, stamina and performance capacity. Increased red blood cell production results in higher amounts of oxygen being transported to the muscles. At the practical level this means fatigue will come on much later during intensive workouts.
- Recovering faster: Expect your turnaround time between workouts to improve greatly, where before it might have taken 48 hours or more to fully recover, Testosterone Propionate can decrease this down to just 24 hours. Fitting in more workouts each week will naturally contribute to faster gains.
- Burning fat and preserving muscle: Testosterone Propionate is not normally thought of as a fat burning steroid and while it’s the main effect of this steroid, you will often find that you do lose some body fat on a cycle but more importantly it’s the preservation of lean muscle on a cutting cycle that makes it worthwhile adding Testosterone Propionate to any fat loss cycle.
- Lifting heavier: Big muscular strength gains are one of the most prominent benefits of Testosterone Propionate. You will be able to increase your maximum weights by a significant amount, and combined with extra endurance this can only lead to more efficient, larger muscle gains.
Testosterone Propionate Cycles and Stacks
Testosterone Propionate can be used very effectively as a sole compound in a cycle, while being equally useful when stacked with any one or more other steroids.
Testosterone Propionate is compatible with all other steroids so you have unlimited scope in creating a stack to achieve specific results.
Even beginners will find Testosterone Propionate to be a tolerable steroid to use, in fact testosterone in any ester is always recommended as the first steroid for new users to try before moving on to more powerful steroids which often come with harsher side effects.
Beginner Testosterone Propionate Cycle
Beginners who are getting a first experience with steroids will find that Testosterone Propionate brings about substantial muscle gains. It’s always easier to gain more muscles with your first cycles, with gains becoming slower as you grow and your physique grows.
But as a first time Testosterone Propionate cycle, you will almost certainly find it tolerable to take doses ranging from 300-500mg per week. Side effects should be manageable at these doses.
With Testosterone Propionate being a fast acting steroid, cycles can be shorter if you desire because gains will start being seen early on. A cycle length of 8-10 weeks provides a good introduction to Testosterone Propionate for beginners.
Intermediate Testosterone Propionate Cycle
There are two things intermediate steroid users will frequently do with a Testosterone Propionate cycle: increase the dosage of this steroid, and/or include one or more additional steroids into a stack.
This will result in bigger gains, but also more likely different or more severe side effects. Particularly in regards to stress on the cardiovascular system, androgenic and estrogenic effects, and in some cases you will start to deal with oral steroids to are liver toxic.
A sample intermediate cycle that is certain to produce outstanding results involves the inclusion of Deca Durabolin and Dianabol; two steroids you can’t go wrong with.
It also means you don’t need to be raising Testosterone Propionate to very high doses because these other powerful steroids can contribute excellent anabolic effects.
A 10 week cycle can consist of 25mg daily of Dianabol for the first 4 weeks only. Testosterone Propionate (500mg weekly) and Deca-Durabolin (400mg weekly) are taken for the whole 10 weeks.
Advanced Testosterone Propionate Cycle
Confident and advanced anabolic steroid users will have experience with at least a few other types of steroids in addition to testosterone. This opens the door to much more powerful cycles that provide the most extreme possible results, whether that be in bulking or for cutting and body recomposition.
Advanced users won’t necessarily be using very high doses of Testosterone Propionate, because the addition of some of the most powerful steroids to the cycle can mean Testosterone Propionate takes more of a backseat, yet still important, role.
Testosterone Propionate and Deca-Durabolin is a tried and tested stack and the bonus here is that Deca also won’t stress the liver, and it should not worsen effects on cholesterol noticeably either.
The addition of Deca-Durabolin in this cycle will supercharge both strength and muscle gains above what you can achieve solely with Testosterone Propionate. Even though Deca is far from the most potent bulking steroid, it’s a good option when you want to minimize side effects.
A sample 10 week cycle:
- 600mg weekly of Testosterone Propionate
- 300mg weekly of Deca-Durabolin
This is just one example of dozens of cycles and combinations you can put together as an advanced user with Testosterone Propionate.
Stacking Testosterone Propionate
Testosterone is always useful in a stack and Testosterone Propionate will stack very well with any other anabolic steroids.
The versatility of Testosterone Propionate makes it valuable in off season bulking stacks, cutting stacks, or simply as a testosterone replacement at low doses to combat the suppression being caused by other steroids.
When stacking Testosterone Propionate with other injectable steroids, it’s wise to consider how fast or slow acting they are and how frequently they also need to be injected as you could see yourself injecting five or more times per week when stacking multiple injectable steroids. This can be overwhelming for newer users.
Another option to avoid any further injections is to only stack Testosterone Propionate with oral steroids and while this will introduce risks of liver toxicity (which can be reduced by limiting the length of time you take the oral steroid), it provides another option for those who are not comfortable with so many injections each week.
In the case of bulking in the off season you can consider stacking Testosterone Propionate with tried and tested steroids like Dianabol, Anadrol and Deca-Durabolin.
If cutting is your goal, Testosterone Propionate works perfectly alongside all the best cutting steroids whether it be Masteron, Winstrol, Anavar, Primobolan and even Trenbolone (which you can also use for mass gaining).
Testosterone Propionate Dosages and Administration
Dosages of Testosterone Propionate can vary from the very low dose required when it’s being as nothing more than a testosterone replacement (around 200mg weekly) to maintain normal function, right up to quite extreme doses that some advanced users will take which can extend to 2000mg per week; but such use of this steroid is rarely considered necessary or beneficial.
Most users will look at taking more moderate doses because quite simply, excellent gains are achievable with mid-range doses by any level of bodybuilder and you will find that your food intake and training is where your results will be made.
Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Testosterone Propionate Dosages
Testosterone Propionate is a steroid that even first time users can often comfortably use at doses that more advanced users will take. While your specific purpose for using Testosterone Propionate will determine the best dose, for general bodybuilding use focused on gaining muscle, a standard weekly dose of 400-500mg is always going to be effective and is suitable for beginners.
Intermediate users who are comfortable with the lower dosages of Testosterone Propionate will often increase this to 700-800mg per week. Side effects should still be manageable at this level, although closer attention will need to be paid to cholesterol and blood pressure levels. At this stage you will almost certainly be looking at stacking, which allows you to keep Testosterone Propionate at lower doses.
Some advanced steroid users can be known for taking very high doses of testosterone. But others will argue that there’s little benefit in doing so, and that you’re much better off stacking Testosterone Propionate with other steroids at lower doses to achieve massive results.
Some advanced users will extend to 1000mg weekly, and even higher. A common error can be in thinking that excessive doses of Testosterone Propionate is what makes an advanced user, but this is not correct. In fact, well planned stacks usually with moderate doses is what can separate the advanced users from the rest.
Regardless of your experience level and your dosage, if you want to use Testosterone Propionate properly then your weekly dose must be split into multiple injections – usually taken every other day.
Medical Testosterone Propionate Dosage
Medical use of Testosterone Propionate has reduced over time in favor of the longer lasting esters which require much less frequent injecting, and are less painful injections by comparison.
But those who still use it will normally be prescribed a TRT dose of between 100-200mg weekly, depending on the level of natural testosterone that needs replacing.
These doses are intended purely to restore normal everyday function and are not enough to promote the gains in muscle desired by bodybuilders.
Female Testosterone Propionate Dosage
Testosterone Propionate will rarely be considered as a suitable steroid for women to use for performance and bodybuilding, because testosterone has strong androgenic effects which are certain to bring about unwanted virilization signs in women who take anything above a very low dose for short periods of time.
This could be as low as 20mg per week, which can still bring about symptoms of virilization in women. The longer the testosterone is taken for, the higher the risk that these signs will develop and they can include a noticeable change to the voice as well as growth of body and facial hair.
While Testosterone Propionate isn’t considered ideal for use by females, there are a few steroids that women can tolerate much better; one of these is Anavar (Oxandrolone) which is likely the most popular anabolic steroid among females.
Proper Administration and Timing
The major downside of Testosterone Propionate is the requirement to inject it several times per week, which is the only way you can maintain your desired level of testosterone as this steroid will only take a few days to leave the body and to have its effects wear off.
While frequent injections can be an inconvenience in itself, added to this is the fact that Testosterone Propionate is known as a painful injection thanks to the structure of the ester and the oil used.
An injection of once every two days is the standard procedure for Testosterone Propionate.
This requires you to have an adequate number of injection sites that you can rotate and allow each one to recover, with muscle soreness post-injection and potential inflammation not unheard of with this steroid.
Testosterone Propionate vs Cypionate
Two of the most widely used testosterone esters among bodybuilders are Testosterone Propionate and Testosterone Cypionate. Cypionate is the more popular of the two, and there are a few good reasons for that.
Testosterone Cypionate is a much longer lasting ester, which means you don’t need to be injecting every two days like with Testosterone Propionate. With Cypionate you can get away with a once a week injection if you want.
Testosterone Propionate is also notorious for being an injection that causes pain, while this isn’t such an issue with Cypionate. And when you have a painful steroid that must be injected multiple times each week as is needed with Testosterone Propionate, this becomes a disadvantage.
Testosterone Propionate will also usually be more expensive as a total cost for a standard cycle. But it does come with the big benefit of giving you results early in the cycle by nature of how fast acting the propionate ester is. Cypionate can have you waiting a couple of weeks to start seeing benefits.
For most users the benefits of Testosterone Cypionate – the fact it’s cheaper, less painful, and generally just easier to use – makes it a preferred choice over Testosterone Propionate in most cases.
Testosterone Propionate Risks and Side Effects
The benefits of Testosterone Propionate are attractive, but we can’t look at the positives without also considering the negatives. First time users of Testosterone Propionate won’t know what to expect in terms of your individual response.
You might have heard about the side effects that others have experienced, but how you respond as an individual to this steroid won’t be the same as someone else. This is especially the case when we look at side effects of the androgenic and cardiovascular types.
Side effects caused by estrogenic activity are some of then most dreaded because they are visibly very noticeable. The higher your dose of Testosterone Propionate, the more aromatization that will occur; resulting in more conversion of testosterone to estrogen.
Water retention and gynecomastia are the two primary estrogenic side effects. These can be mitigated quite well with the use of either an aromatase inhibitor drug, or a SERM.
While AIs are considered more effective, they do have the downside of further negatively altering cholesterol levels. A consequence of uncontrolled fluid retention can be an increase in blood pressure which provides another important reason for being proactive in controlling estrogenic side effects when taking Testosterone Propionate.
Testosterone itself will cause androgenic side effects, but even more so is DHT which results from a conversion process. DHT is responsible for the hair loss that some men will experience when using Testosterone Propionate – depending on your genetic predisposition.
This can start with hair shedding or thinning, and then lead to noticeable male pattern baldness. Additionally, with increasing production of sebum or oil in the skin, acne breakouts can become a real problem for some testosterone users. Androgenic effects such as these are very much dependent on genetics so will always be experienced differently between individuals.
An unfortunate consequence of using any anabolic steroids is the changes they bring about to cholesterol. In the case of Testosterone Propionate it’s usually a raising of LDL cholesterol that’s the main culprit, but a decrease of HDL can also occur. Combined with the common strategy of using an aromatase inhibitor (AI), these cholesterol changes can also lead to increased blood pressure.
It’s inevitable that doses above basic testosterone replacement will lead to a suppression – or even a total shutdown – of your regular testosterone production.
The more Testosterone Propionate you take, the more severe the suppression will be but in any case, without the use of PCT drugs following your cycle you will certainly drop into a state of low testosterone; and with that comes many debilitating symptoms including the loss of muscle gained over your cycle.
This is easily avoided through implementing a basic PCT cycle which will need to start within the first week after a Testosterone Propionate, as this steroid quickly clears the system.
Liver toxicity is not an issue with Testosterone Propionate, but it will be a problem you will need to monitor if stacking this steroid with any hepatotoxic oral anabolic steroids.
So although the list of possible Testosterone Propionate side effects is long, most males will find short term, moderate dose use to be manageable unless existing health issues exist with the cardiovascular system or where genetics dictate that hair loss will be severe and permanent.
Testosterone Propionate Results
There’s a lot to consider when thinking about the results you might see when using Testosterone Propionate.
With so many different ways of using this steroid, for different goals, and stacked with other steroids, results can vary considerably between people. So how can you know what to expect?
Regardless of most other factors, if you’re using Testosterone Propionate at performance doses (usually 400mg and above weekly) you WILL see big gains in strength, impressive lean mass, some extent of fat loss, more stamina and faster recovery. These are the basics of Testosterone Propionate results.
But you can fine tune and enhance your results with different doses, specific diet and training plans and of course, by stacking with other steroids that create more powerful bulking cycles or cutting cycles and increase your strength to even higher levels.
Muscle gains are often in the order of 20lbs or more for new users, who will find it easier to make big gains at that stage.
How to Buy Testosterone Propionate?
Testosterone Propionate still has widespread use in the bodybuilding community, even if it is not the most popular testosterone steroid. But people who prefer to quick acting nature of this ester continue to use it, and it is generally easy to find for purchase, although you will note that it’s almost always more expensive than other esters of testosterone.
It’s important to look at the concentration of Testosterone Propionate when considering the total cost for a cycle. Usually it’s sold as a 100mg/ml concentration, which will make it cheaper per unit compared to a standard 250mg/ml of other esters.
Pharmaceutical grade and underground lab manufactured Testosterone Propionate for sale can also come in lower concentrations of 50mg/ml and even 25mg/ml.
So while each unit has a lower price tag due to the lower concentration, you need to buy a higher quantity and that’s where prices get pushed up with this particular testosterone steroid.
Just how much more a Testosterone Propionate will cost compared to Testosterone Cypionate or other esters will greatly depend on your location and source, but it’s virtually guaranteed that Testosterone Propionate is always going to come in at a higher price per cycle.
The ultimate quality of Testosterone Propionate will come with pharmaceutical grade, but if you’re in the US you won’t locally manufactured testosterone from authorized pharmaceutical labs.
Instead, most Americans will look overseas to acquire genuine pharmaceutical grade Testosterone Propionate, in particular Mexico where it’s relatively easy to find and purchase.
There are counterfeit versions of pharmaceutical Testosterone Propionate out there, so always check your sources to ensure you’re getting the real thing. Fakes can be under-dosed, contaminated and even pose a risk to your health if good hygiene practices haven’t been carried out.
It’s not unheard of for infections to occur in the worst cases, while counterfeit steroids will not only not deliver the type of results you expect from Testosterone Propionate, but can bring about side effects that will not occur with high quality Testosterone Propionate.
This is why it’s vitally important to get your hands on genuine Testosterone Propionate from reliable suppliers.

Testosterone Propionate FAQ
What does Testosterone Propionate do?
Testosterone Propionate, when taken at performance doses, will boost your red blood cell production, enhance muscular endurance and strength, increase nitrogen retention, reduce the catabolic hormone cortisol and enhance protein synthesis.
All of this results in the ability to gain more muscle, train harder, lose fat, and recover faster at a higher level than is ever possible without anabolic steroids.
Which is better Testosterone Enanthate or Propionate?
Both forms will provide you with the same benefits, so neither Testosterone Propionate or Enanthate can be considered better when it comes to results.
However Testosterone Enanthate is considered an easier steroid to use: it’s not as painful and requires less frequent injecting thanks to its longer lasting ester. For that reason it is the more popular testosterone form between these two.
When should I take Testosterone Propionate?
Testosterone Propionate needs to be injected at least three times weekly so you can maintain an optimal level of the steroid in circulation, as with its short half life it will leave your body within a matter of days.
Most bodybuilders will inject Testosterone Propionate every other day, making for a three times weekly administration. This injection can cause a lot of muscle soreness, and sometimes inflammation, so it’s critical that you rotate the injection site each time.
Does Testosterone Propionate burn fat?
You can burn some fat with Testosterone Propionate thanks to its powerful anabolic and anti-catabolic properties, and as a natural consequence of building lean muscle.
Testosterone Propionate is also valuable in a cutting cycle where it will protect your existing lean muscle despite consuming a strict calorie deficit diet to burn off fat.
For ultimate cutting results with Testosterone Propionate, stack it with powerful fat burning steroids like Winstrol or Masteron.
How much Testosterone Propionate should I inject to build muscle?
Most bodybuilders will want to take at least 500mg of Testosterone Propionate for at least 8 weeks to build muscle.
Many will find that this dosage is more than enough, but plenty of bodybuilders will take 1000mg and sometimes much more – it depends what your specific goals are and your comfort level in using high dose steroids.
For maximum muscle gains, Testosterone Propionate can be stacked with other powerful anabolics like Trenbolone and Dianabol.
What type of testosterone works the fastest?
Testosterone Propionate is one of the fastest working testosterone steroids you can get.
It has a half life of about two days so the hormone is released quickly into your body, but also exits quickly so you need frequent injections to maintain a useful level of testosterone when using the propionate ester.
Out of the three most popular testosterone esters – Enanthate, Cypionate and Propionate, Testosterone Propionate is by far the faster working.
How much Testosterone Propionate do bodybuilders take?
Bodybuilders will usually take anywhere from 400mg to 1000mg per week of Testosterone Propionate. Some will go much higher than this, but rarely is it necessary and even a moderate 500mg weekly dosage can provide exceptional gains in muscle, strength, recovery and endurance.
Very high doses are also likely to worsen side effects and raise the risk of high blood pressure and it is usually more beneficial to stack Testosterone Propionate at moderate doses with other steroids in order to get massive results.
Does Testosterone Propionate raise blood pressure?
All anabolic steroids can pose a risk to your cardiovascular health, including raising blood pressure. Testosterone Propionate is not as severe as some other steroids, but your blood pressure could increase if Testosterone Propionate changes your cholesterol levels too much, or if uncontrolled water retention becomes excessive.
Is Testosterone Propionate good for beginners?
Testosterone steroids are the best choice for new users, although Testosterone Propionate is one of the more difficult ones for newbies compared to some other esters.
The main reason many beginners will choose not to use Testosterone Propionate is because of the frequent and often painful injections, which can make this ester less appealing for new steroid users compared to the less painful and longer lasting esters like Enanthate and Cypionate.
The pros of Testosterone Propionate are well known and respected: big muscle gains, massive strength, huge endurance and recovery benefits, muscle preservation while cutting.
But the cons of this steroid can be pretty serious: expect hair loss at a young age if your genetics dictate that to happen, then there’s the ugly acne that gets all the wrong attention. Cholesterol increases are nothing to sneeze at, neither are the risks to blood pressure.
All of these things take time and energy away from what we want to be focusing on: training and eating right to get results.
