What is RAD-140 (Testolone)
Testolone is one of the most popular muscle building Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMs). It is considered one of the four most popular SARMs being used today, alongside Andarine, Ostarine and Ligandrol.
RAD-140 is being researched as a possible form of androgen replacement therapy, instead of conventional testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). Its possible uses include treating muscle wasting and bone loss conditions like osteoporosis thanks to its potential to improve bone density.
RAD-140 can be used by both men and women, and both should be able to avoid any serious side effects by maintaining a moderate dosage schedule.
Like all SARMs, RAD-140 is listed as a prohibited substance in the sporting world. In many countries it is not legal for individuals to buy, sell or use RAD-140 at all.
Some athletes have been caught using RAD-140 which shows how highly regarded it is and how desirable its performance benefits are.

What does RAD-140 do?
The most exciting and powerful benefit of RAD-140 is its promotion of lean muscle gains. RAD-140 specifically targets androgen receptors in muscle and bone and it is one of the best SARMs for muscle building.
Some people will argue that it is equally as powerful as some steroids in this regard and it is one of the first SARMs bodybuilders will consider using for bulking as an alternative to steroids.
Users of RAD-140 who undertake a serious bulking diet and weights training program can often see lean gains of 10lbs and above from a standard cycle.
The massive boost to strength that RAD-140 provides is its lesser talked about, yet probably most important benefit. This is where the extra power comes from that will power your workouts and weight lifting so you can gain more.
The anabolic power of RAD-140 which translates to increased strength and muscle power again rivals that of steroids like testosterone. With increased red blood cell count and circulation, more blood and nutrients are getting to the muscles. You should see greater pumps and an overall heightened endurance and ability to lift weights much heavier than before.
It’s not purely about bodybuilding with RAD-140. One of the reasons it is popular with athletes is its ability to improve endurance, energy and overall performance. Both physical and mental energy will see a boost with this SARM and if you’re including any cardiovascular activity in your workouts, your capacity for endurance should be greatly enhanced.
Fat burning is a lesser known benefit of Testolone, but it makes a lot of sense. When an agent with such powerful anabolic properties as this is used, it’s only natural that it’s going to be beneficial for losing fat as well. Just how well RAD-140 will help you burn fat will depend a lot on your diet. If you’re using this SARM for bulking and eating a lot to support muscle gains, fat loss will be moderate.
But RAD-140 does have the potential to be used on cutting cycles, and here it not only helps preserve existing lean muscle but actively helps get rid of some of the more hard to move fat. To get maximum fat loss results with RAD-140, a cutting cycle will almost always include other compounds that excel at fat burning like Cardarine.
RAD-140 also improves recovery and increases bone density. You should be able to get to your next workout sooner, and early on in the cycle become accustomed to being able to do more intense workouts with less muscle soreness afterwards.
RAD-140 increases your levels of circulating testosterone during a cycle (but it will crash your test at the end of the cycle if you don’t do PCT). This comes with all of the above benefits, many of which are caused at least partially by more available testosterone.
But additional and less thought about benefits come about as well: increased mental energy, focus, and mood as well as increased libido. Obviously these are befits for the male Testolone user, so what about females?
Women can use Testolone and while it will also likely cause some increase in testosterone in the female body, it won’t increase it to levels that causes problems for women. With this said, RAD-140 is a SARM that’s considered more advanced and most women won’t want to select this one as a first SARM experience.
Anyone who is adverse to using steroid injections would find another benefit of Testolone being that it comes in pill, liquid or powder forms so injections are not necessary.
Short-Term Side Effects
When we use SARMs we expect to have no androgenic side effects. After all that’s what the selective nature of a SARM like RAD-140 is all about: only selecting androgen receptors that affect muscle and bone, while ideally not affecting those which cause the dreaded androgenic side effects that you’d be familiar with if you’ve used steroids.
Unfortunately through other means RAD-140 can in fact bring about some of those familiar androgenic side effects. This is thought to be caused by an increase in free testosterone that will then convert to both DHT and estrogen. So it’s not just androgenic side effects you need to watch out for with this SARM, but estrogenic as well.
You might find quite a lot of talk about people losing or shedding their hair when using Testolone. This SARM technically should not cause hair loss, because it doesn’t bind to androgen receptors that impact the hair. But there are other possible mechanisms that could, in theory, stimulate hair loss in susceptible people (mostly men). This is a result of increased testosterone levels that in turn could elevate DHT levels, and it’s DHT that is responsible for male pattern baldness developing.
But unlike with steroids, some users of RAD-140 and other SARMs find that their hair actually grows back after stopping the cycle. This indicates that the follicles are not damaged in the way they are when using steroids. This applies to short term use of RAD-140 only. If you use it for excessive periods of time, there is a higher chance your hair loss could become permanent.
Increase in liver enzyme values is a possibility with this SARM. Unfortunately very little information is available on its effects on the liver, besides one study. In any case, if the liver is affected at all (you could undertake testing during your cycle if you suspect anything being wrong, or if you’re simply curious) it should return to normal function a short time after stopping use of RAD-140. This can take up to a few weeks. This is the main reason it’s so important to have at least one month in between cycles, although many people will recommend two or three months of no SARMs use.
Nausea, fatigue, headache and other mild side effects are sometimes reported by RAD-140 users. These types of short term side effects are not uncommon when using any drug for the first time and everybody will respond differently to a new substance.
Long-Term Side Effects
All SARMs are lightly researched compounds classed as investigation al drugs. This means we have no real idea of what the possible long term effects of using this SARM could be.
It has had minimal study on humans so far, with the first one being in 2017 for three years on breast cancer suffering postmenopausal women. A report of liver injury caused by RAD-140 use was recorded in 2020.
Although, as mentioned above, changes in liver enzymes should revert once you stop a RAD-140 cycle the risk of longer term health complications are a possibility with any substance if you abuse it by using this SARM at excessive doses, by undertaking long cycles beyond what is recommended, or if you fail to take a sufficient break in between cycles to allow the liver and the rest of your body to recover.
RAD-140 is known to have some of the most significant testosterone suppressive properties of any SARM and if used at high doses over prolonged time periods, damage to the HPTA (hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis) is a real possibility. The long term consequences of this can include negative impacts on fertility.
As far as the minimal information we have available to date on RAD-140, the risks of long term side effects should be mitigated by maintaining sensible and moderate use of this SARM.
Hepatotoxic Side Effects (Liver Toxicity)
Almost all of the talk about the possible liver impacts of RAD-140 originate from a single study where one person presented with drug induced liver injury after using RAD-140 and another SARM. The person also had a history of alcohol use but it was not known whether that played a role in the liver disease. The researchers did include that severe drug-induced hepatotoxicity was associated with RAD-140 and the other SARM, LGD-4033.
The FDA has issued warnings that all SARMs including RAD-140 come with the risk of liver injury.
The truth is that with very little information available we can not know the full extent of just what this SARM could do to your liver in the short and long term. This is one of the great risks associated with using Testolone.
If you are still determined to use it, taking common sense actions to at least reduce the risk of liver damage is wise. This includes keeping to a low to moderate dose, avoiding long cycles, and always taking a SARM-free break of at least one month (but longer is better) before starting another cycle.
HPTA and Endogenous Testosterone Production Side Effects (Testosterone Suppression)
As mentioned, RAD-140’s effects on testosterone are potentially its most concerning side effect. It is thought of as one of the most suppressive SARMs available.
In fact the level of suppression can rival that of most anabolic steroids, so if you’ve used steroids before it will not come as a great shock. But if RAD-140 is your first experience with performance enhancing substances you will need to be prepared for the impacts of low testosterone that will be felt if you don’t take necessary measures.
Getting your testosterone levels checked following a cycle can reveal exactly what your level of suppression is.
While some other SARMs can let you get away without doing PCT, all men will want to do post cycle therapy after using RAD-140. Ideally, PCT should be started five days after the end of your RAD-140 cycle (depending if you are using any other SARMs or steroids).
A four week PCT cycle is recommended making use of either Clomid or Nolvadex – the same drugs which are used for steroid PCT cycles. Clomid is recommended if your cycle has included only this SARM. In this case the dosage should be 25mg per day for 30 days. At that point, your normal testosterone function should be restored with no ill effects.
Gynecomastia and Water Retention
One of the most desirable benefits of any SARM is the ability to avoid dreaded estrogenic side effects that come with most steroids. Can you avoid water retention and gyno with RAD-140? We know that this SARM can in fact increase estrogen levels in men, even though it is not an aromatizing compound.
If too much estrogen is produced, you can start to develop water retention, bloating and gynecomastia. This can ruin your gains and physique, with the added water weight masking your muscle gains and preventing a hard and dry look that you’d otherwise be able to achieve.
So it’s important that, if you do suffer these side effects, to make use of an aromatase inhibitor as you would when using steroids. Keeping in mind that these side effects are more likely when using RAD-140 at high doses and for longer than 8 weeks.
Unless you plan to do very long RAD-140 cycles, you might be able to avoid development of water retention and gyno, and not have to use an AI drug. This will largely be an individual response, and only after your first couple of cycles will you know whether increased estrogen is going to be a problem at any particular dose.
Women Specific Side Effects
Women can have great success using RAD-140, but it is considered one of the more advanced SARMs that should be used after females have some experience with other less potent SARMs.
At lower doses women shouldn’t experience any additional side effects compared to men. It’s not recommended that women exceed 10mg per day. If higher doses are used, virilizing side effects like deepened voice and hair growth may be possible, but little information and no research is available on this.
Some women complain of fatigue and nausea at the start of the cycle.
There are some concerning stories around of women seeing more severe side effects with RAD-140, but besides very high doses, this could also occur as a result of poor quality Testolone. If your Testolone order contains other substances, as can often be the case when buying RAD-140 underground, unexpected side effects can develop.
Is RAD-140 Safe?
No SARM can be considered safe because we have no idea what future hazards and risks will be found if RAD-140 continues to be researched and studied. As it stands now, using RAD-140 means taking the chance that you might or might not have to deal with complications in future as a result of its use.
This would apply more so if you plan to use RAD-140 regularly and use it at higher doses. But no one could say for sure whether even lower doses are safe. Anabolic steroids have been around for much longer than any SARMs and while much more is known about the long term health risks of steroids, we still learn new things about them today.
SARMs including RAD-140 are in their infancy and it may take another decade or two until the users of today start to report any long term health complications if they develop.

FAQs
Does RAD-140 suppress testosterone?
Yes, it is one of the most suppressive SARMs. At higher doses you can expect severe testosterone suppression, but even at lower doses men will want to do PCT after a RAD-140 cycle.
Does RAD-140 affect estrogen?
RAD-140 does not cause any estrogen conversion, but it can raise estrogen by other processes. This means side effects like gynecomastia and water retention are a possibility with RAD-140, especially at higher doses and on longer cycles.
What are the side effects of Testolone?
For most users the most serious side effect is testosterone suppression and it can be quite severe, getting worse as you raise your dosage. Impacts on the liver enzymes are possible but little is known about this side effect yet. Some users might experience temporary effects like headaches and nausea. Others report hair loss but this seems to be an individual reaction in particularly sensitive people.
Does RAD-140 affect the liver?
One study has shown hepatotoxicity associated with RAD-140. The raised liver enzymes in the patient took three months to return to normal. While it’s only one study, it does indicate some risk of liver toxicity in some users of RAD-140 and this makes it important to avoid using high doses.
Can women use RAD-140?
Yes this SARM can be used by females with excellent muscle gains results. It should be used at lower doses. It is not recommended as a SARM for the first time female user, as it is more powerful than some others like Ostarine. Women with some SARMs experience may then choose to give the more potent RAD-140 a go.
How much muscle can I gain with RAD-140?
Your maximum gains will depend on your diet and training, but it’s possible to gain over 10lbs of muscle on a standard RAD-140 cycle. Some guys even report up to 15 pounds gained in an 8 week cycle.
Final Thoughts
The whole idea of using SARMs is to get the good benefits of steroids without the androgenic and estrogenic side effects. While some other SARMs manage to do that well, RAD-140 doesn’t let you avoid many of the same side effects that you get with steroids.
Its benefits vs risks are really no better than most anabolic steroids, and many people believe that RAD-140 is actually more unpleasant to use than tried and true steroids like testosterone and Anavar.
